    9 Beautiful Patio Design Ideas

For our money, there’s nothing better than lounging away a summer afternoon on your patio, or entertaining guests with a barbecue in the evening. Sometimes, people get caught up with interior design, forgetting that the exterior of their home can be the most beautiful and rewarding.

And thankfully, we’re based in Port Coquitlam in sunny British Columbia, where decks and patios can be enjoyed all year long (especially if you don’t mind installing an umbrella). That’s why we help clients create the perfect patio to suit their needs and style, using frameless glass railings.

We’re continually inspired by the patio and deck spaces we help our clients create. If you need a little inspiration, here are some gorgeous patio trends we’re loving right now.

Patio Design Idea #1: Get Plush and Cozy

Gone are the days of uncomfortable (and unattractive) plastic deck chairs for your patio or balcony. You want your outdoor space to be as inviting as possible, and plush, comfy patio furniture is definitely inviting.

Of course, you don’t want to spend tons of time cleaning, so go for easy-care furniture. And it’s often a good idea to test out any furniture before purchasing – it may not be quite as cozy as it looks in the picture.

    #2: Embrace Minimalism

Or, go the opposite route and embrace minimalism for your outdoor space, letting the surroundings and view do the talking. We love that our clients for this side-mount glass railing project kept the space open and flexible.

    #3: Don’t Block The View

Like these two pictures from our clients illustrate, frameless glass is an incredibly beautiful (yet still practical) option for around patios, pools, balconies, verandas or any other area that you wish to enclose but where you do not want to impede the view.

Our railings are made of strong tempered glass which is durable and secure, and glass railings are also easy to clean. As such they are the perfect way to create an almost invisible, unobtrusive protective barrier. It’s just you and your view.

    #4: Add A Fire Pit

Fire Pits are definitely having their moment, and with good reason. During the pandemic, we’ve learned to make the most of small spaces and small moments. And an evening spent around the fire, especially with some s’mores thrown in, is good for the soul.

    #5: Use Bold Colours

Maybe there’s ‘rules’ for interior design. But with exterior design, the sky’s truly the limit. Have fun! Be bold! Use this space to really get creative and express yourself.

And a note for anyone who may be sharing their patio space, one of the many great features of frameless glass railings is that they have no panels for pets or children to climb through.

    #6: Try Mediterranean Vibes

Speaking of bright colours, how about a bright and beautiful Mediterranean blue? Bringing in playful Mediterranean vibes into your patio design is fresh and fun – and a lovely accompaniment to wine and tapas.

    #7: Twinkling Lights

Especially in the summertime, we like to linger on our decks and balconies long into the evening. When the sun goes down, there’s nothing prettier than a string of twinkling lights to light your way.

    #8: Dine Out

Think about how you’ll be using your outdoor space, and design accordingly. So if you’re a family that likes eating outdoors, then go for it. Create an outdoor dining space that’s as beautiful as your kitchen table, and you’ll be surprised how often you use it.

    #9: Go Green

There are two great ways to ‘go green’ for your balcony. The first way is to incorporate lots of potted plants and greenery, like our clients in Port Moody did here.

And of course the second way to green your balcony or patio is to choose environmentally friendly products in your design and construction. Thankfully, the glass we use in our design is 100% recyclable. In fact, it’s one of the greenest construction materials because its basic component is silica (ie, sand) which is easily obtainable throughout the world.

We install stunning frameless glass railings in Metro Vancouver, Burnaby, Tri Cities, New Westminster, Richmond and Surrey. Without a doubt they are the best solution for open space interiors and perfect view exteriors.

Because ultimately, our favourite patio design is a no-handrail, no-bottom rail, frameless glass railing that lives up to your million dollar view. To learn more, contact us today, or visit our showroom.

Whether your living room staircase is looking a little outdated or you want to keep kids or pets safe on the patio, frameless glass railings are a beautifully durable way to transform any home or commercial space.

If you install them indoors, these innovative panels create a spacious and contemporary aesthetic. If you use them outdoors, they add peace of mind without sacrificing appearance. They’re really hard for kids to climb, and have no panels for children or pets to get through.

Also, because the panels are made of tempered glass, they’re incredibly strong and durable—they’re actually shatterproof!

Before we get into the types of rails that are available, here are a few more benefits:

    • They’re maintenance-free. A squeegee coupled with our non-toxic cleaner is all you need to keep your panels looking like new.
    • They’re excellent for wind and noise protection. That’s why they’re commonly used for outdoor restaurant seating.
    • They’re environmentally friendly. The glass is 100% recyclable and is actually one of the greenest construction materials out there, because its basic component is easily obtainable silica (sand).

    Types of Frameless Glass Railings

    Top Mount

Especially practical and visually pleasing around patios, balconies, pools and verandas, because they safely enclose an area without impeding your million-dollar view.

These panels are held securely in place with horizontal metal strips, much like a curtain rail. This provides an extremely strong base for increased safety in your home or commercial building. You can opt for 12, 15 or 19 mm rails.

    Side Mount

These are often used on stairways, along with balconies and verandas. Really, you can install a side mount rail almost anywhere that there is a vertical surface, and you don’t need baseboard-style foundations to hold the panels in place.

All side mount glass railings are made out of the best quality 12, 15 or 19 mm tempered glass. The finishings are stainless steel. This means they’re built to last for many years without discolouring or peeling.

How to Choose Frameless Glass Railings

We have helped many satisfied customers in the Lower Mainland of BC combine beauty and safety within their homes and businesses.

To get started, think about areas of your home or commercial space that would benefit from this type of rail. Maybe you’re concerned about your grandkids playing on the patio, or want to make sure your pool is completely enclosed. Or, perhaps you’ve got an older wooden railing you’ve been meaning to update for years.

One of the big advantages of these installations is that they seamlessly flow with any style of design—whether your decor inspiration is beach house, farmhouse or sleek and minimalistic,

  3. How to Spring Clean Your Patio

How to Spring Clean Your Patio

As the snow, slush and rain of winter (hopefully) turn into sunnier days, we start thinking about using our backyards and decks again.

Warmer weather means you can enjoy your great outdoors, but first you have to tidy up! Here’s how:

    Declutter

If you’re like most of us, you use your yard to store things – from kids’ toys to gardening tools.

Take a look around and see what you can do without. If you’re a fan of Marie Kondo, the author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, this will probably be fun for you! Either donate what you don’t need or find somewhere else to store it.

    Get rid of grime

Spring clean your patio to leave it sparkling. Sweep up debris and rinse everything off with a garden hose.

Mix up a cleaning solution that’s safe for your wood or concrete or start with soap and water if you’re not sure. Use a scrub brush to get rid of stubborn spots and rinse everything off.

    Clean up cushions and umbrellas

After a long, cold winter your pillows and umbrella may be looking a bit dingy. Mix a quart of warm water, a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and a tablespoon of borax in a bucket.

Using a sponge, scrub the cushions and allow everything to sit for about 15 minutes. Rinse with water and stand the cushions to dry in the sun.

    Upgrade the aesthetics

Now is the perfect time to bring in some new stuff. Depending on your budget, you could buy a new furniture set, add patterned pillows or blankets or install a frameless outdoor railing.

These sleek and modern deck railings are the best way to enjoy an unobstructed view. With no handrail or bottom rail, it’s a great way to bring elegance to your entire area – whether you’re entertaining or alone with a book.

Other reasons to choose a frameless outdoor railing:

    • It reduces wind and noise
    • It’s maintenance free
    • It’s safer than traditional deck rails as there are no panels for children or pets to climb through
    • It’s easy to clean and maintain since there are no grooves or corners where dirt and mould can accumulate

    Fix up your light fixtures

Don’t forget about your fixtures, which can get dusty and faded after a season of sitting unused. Start with a rag and window cleaner to wipe the inside and outside of the glass.

If there are hard-to-reach spots of dirt, dip an old toothbrush or paintbrush into the window cleaner.

If your fixture has faded, sweep on a new coat of paint or spray on some paint for a brand-new look. Why not try some bright colours like turquoise or Living Coral (Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year) to welcome the warmer seasons?
