Are Glass Railings Hard To Keep Clean?

Many people are attracted to the look of frameless glass railings for their decks and patios, because they are so visually stunning. But they also worry about whether glass railings are hard to keep clean.

Like everything else in your home, glass railings will require some upkeep, but they are not hard to keep clean. In fact, frameless glass railings are even easier to clean and maintain than most other options, especially when they are made with high quality glass that resists stains and mildew.

Why Frameless Glass Railings?

Glass railings are a great choice for exterior spaces where you don’t want to block the view. Elegant, modern and minimalist, they offer both wind and noise protection and reduction.

When used on decks and patios, frameless glass railings are just like the name suggests, with no hand rail and no bottom rail. So with a frameless installation, nothing blocks your million dollar view. They are difficult for children to climb, and they have no panels for children or pets to climb through, making them a safe option as well.

Don’t block your view!

Glass is versatile, strong and easy to keep clean, making it a beautiful material for railings, but a practical one, too. Especially in the sometimes chilly Lower Mainland of BC, it can be nice to have glass railings that can completely block the wind, while letting the sun still warm your patio space.

How To Keep Glass Railings Clean

Frameless glass railings are especially easy to keep clean. They require less upkeep, because they don’t have grooves or corners where dust and mould can accumulate. Glass won’t rust or corrode like other materials, and it’s easy to remove any stains or debris.

And an extra perk: unlike with other materials, if your kids draw all over your glass panels, you can just wipe it off!

When it is time to clean your class railings, it is very easy to do so. Sometimes just a squeegee or a hose will do the trick. Otherwise, we recommend Sprayway Glass Cleaner, which dissolves dirt, grease, grit and grime, leaving a streakless shine with no film.

Sprayway Glass cleaner is by far our top recommended option for cleaning glass railings, but the following options are also safe and effective:

  • Soft ScrubÂŽ Lemon Cleanser
  • Soft ScrubÂŽ with Bleach Cleanser
  • Arm & HammerÂŽ Clean ShowerÂŽ
  • CometÂŽ Bathroom Cleaner with Disinfectant
  • FantastikÂŽ Antibacterial Heavy Duty Cleaner
  • Invisible GlassÂŽ Premium Glass Cleaner
  • KaboomÂŽ Shower, Tub & Tile Cleaner
  • Lime-a-Way Bathroom Cleaner
  • LysolÂŽ Basin, Tub & Tile Cleaner
  • Mr. CleanÂŽ Magic EraserÂŽ
  • Scrubbing BubblesÂŽ Auto Shower Cleaner
  • VimÂŽ Cream Cleanser
  • Vinegar, common household
  • WindexÂŽ

Simply use any of the above options with a soft cloth or a wet sponge for periodic maintenance, and your glass railings will stay looking as beautiful as the day they’re installed. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and to rinse off with clean water.

Please note that you should avoid using abrasive cleaners such as Ajax, Comet, rouge and cerium oxide, as well as hydrofluoric and phosphoric acids. And while glass is quite resilient, abrasive brushes, razor blades and other sharp objects can leave scratches.

Finally, when we’re talking about ‘clean,’ it is also important to note that glass is 100% recyclable and is actually one of the greenest construction materials available. Its basic component is silica (ie, sand), which is easily available throughout the world, making this a ‘cleaner’ choice in every way.

Extra Protection

Like everything else, ordinary glass is prone to damage and aging over time. That’s why we recommend both ShowerGuard and Clear-Fusion Pro, two kinds of glass with extra protection added in during manufacturing.

This technology permanently seals the glass surface. This means glass stays cleaner for longer and is protected against stains and mildew, drastically cutting cleaning time and costs.

As we move into summer, we want to be outdoors on our patio, enjoying the view. But we don’t want to spend all our time cleaning it. That’s why frameless glass railings make a beautiful, green choice that is easy to clean and easy to enjoy.
